Total Acid Phosphatase

Acid phosphatase is an enzyme that releases phosphate used for energy in the liver, bone marrow and prostate gland under acidic conditions. The test is a parameter used to determine whether prostate cancer has metastasised. Total Acid Phosphatase and Prostatic Acid Phosphatase.
Interpretation:Total acid phosphatase is elevated in bone tumours, liver diseases, Piaget’s disease of bone, reticuloendothelial system diseases, renal diseases, high fever, after cardiac spasm and hyperthyroidism. Prostatic acid phosphatase is elevated especially in prostate cancers but may also be elevated in infections and injuries. Therefore, it should be examined together with PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test.
