Thyroid releases hormones to regulate our metabolism. These are, body temperature, muscle strengt ,and many related functions. Thyroglobulin is a protein found in thyroid cells. The thyroid uses thyroglobulin to make active thyroid hormones. Thyroid peroxidase is an enzyme catalyzing the formation of thyroid hormones from thyroglobulin. Antibodies directed to this enzyme prevents the production of Thyroid hormones.
Interpretation:If the patient has high levels of Anti TPO, this may be a sign of a series of autoimmune disorders such as Grave’s disease or Hashimoto thyroiditis. In this case, some series of related tests may be better for the underlying problems. Low levels are not significant.
