Stecobilinogen is a chemical created by bacteria in the gut. It is metabolized by the breakdown of hemoglobin and gives the stool its brown color. It is also called fecal urobilinogen. The liver conjugates bilirubin to make it water-soluble, excreted as urobilinogen in the urine, and converted to stercobilinogen in feces by intestinal bacteria.
