Stool Elastase

Elastase is an enzyme, produced by a special exocrine (not related to hormone production) tissue in the pancreas and provides information about the pancreas function of the patient. The test is done with faeces (stool). The function of elastase is to break down fats, proteins and carbohydrates after digestion. It plays an important role in the digestive process.
Interpretation:Low levels in the stool indicate pancreatic insufficiency and can occur as a result of many different diseases such as chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, cystic fibrosis, diabetes and Crohn’s disease.
