Sperm Vitality is a measure of the proportion of live spermatozoa. This is done by different methods by disturbing the intact cell membrane, by physical methods like hypoosmotic swelling tests to assess the membrane integrity or by special dyes (a cell with intact membrane does not absorb the stain where a dead cell absorbes the red stain).
Interpretation: Mobile spermatozoa is normally considered to be alive. However, in some condutions, immobile spermatozoa may also be alive. Therefore the differentiation between asthenozoospermia (pathological decrease in sperm motility) and necrozoospermia (pathological decrease in sperm vitality), is important for the treatment of inferile men.
