It is a hormone similar in structure with Insulin and plays an insulin like role in childhood growth. In adults, It has an anabolic effect and is synthesized in the liver by the stimulation of Growth Hormone. The highest production is, during the pubertal growth.The lowest levels ocur in infancy and old age.
Interpretation:Interpretation of IGF 1 levels is complicated by the wide normal ranges and marked variations by age sex and pubertal stage.The levels do not fluctuate greatly throughout the day for an individual person. It is used as a screening test for growth hormone deficiency and excess in acromegaly and gigantism. It is elevated in acromegaly with high GH levels, high protein diet, high glycemic index diet, delayed puberty, pregnancy, hyperthyroidism, some rare IGF1 secreting tumors.
