Partial Thromboplastin Time is a test to measure the clotting time of blood. The abbreviation APTT (Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time) is given because the test is specified and enhanced by activating the process by using heparin to get faster results in laboratory conditions. Blood coagulation is a clot formation system occurring due to the activation of a chain of coagulation factors that coagulate the blood in any wound formation (inside or outside the body). If any of the chain components cannot perform its role by any metabolical cause, blood clotting process is failed.
Interpretation:An abnormal value found as a result of this test means that one or more factors in blood coagulation (Factor I, II, V, VIII, IX, XI, XII, Kallikrein, High Molecular Weight Kininogen) are missing or not functioning. Obtaining this result from the test causes the doctor to focus on the factors mentioned individually.
