Progesteron (P)

Progesteron is a hormone produced in the corpus luteum of the ovary. Progesteron is a female sexual hormone which helps to regulate the menstrual cycle, but the main function is to get the uterus ready for pregnancy. In the lutel phase of mensturation after the ovulatory period, it helps in thickening the lining of the uterus for implantation, if fertilization has occured on the ovulatory days. If fertilization has not occured, progesterone hormone falls thus the bleeding period begins to clear the thickened uterus lining for the new menstrual cycle. If there is fertilization, progesteron continues to stimulate the body to provide blood vessels in the endometrium that will feed the growing fetus.
Interpretation:Fertility and mensturation are controlled by some steroid hormones called estrogens and progestins. As progesterone hormone levels change dynamically during menstrual cycle, in infertility and in menopause, the results should be interpreted by your Gynaecologist who has ordered this test. Low progesteron levels may cause abnormal uterine bleeding, irregular missed periods, spotting and abdominal pain during pregnancy and frequent miscarriages.
