Factor V is a protein belonging to the coagulation cascade. It is rarely named as proaccelerin or labile factor. It is not active as an enzyme, but functions as a cofactor. Deficiency leads to predisposition to hemorrhage while some mutations predispose for thrombosis.
Interpretation:Factor V Leiden Mutation is the most common variant which causes an increase in blood clotting (hypercoagulability). Due to this mutation, Protein C (an anticoagulant protein), that normally inhibits the pro-clotting activation of Factor V,i s not able to bind to Factor V, leading to hypercoagulability. This leads to potentially harmful blood clots. Despite increased risk of thromboembolisms, people with this gene have been found shorter lives than the general population if not treated.
