NT-pro BNP

BNP is a hormone test that provides information about the function of heart. It regulates the blood flow throughout the body. This hormone is synthesised in the ventricles of the heart, mainly in the left ventricle. It plays a role in the development of ventricles and in the harmonisation of nervous and hormonal activity. It acts by binding to receptors in vascular smooth muscle cells, heart, adrenal glands, and kidney. Excessive renal sodium excretion decreases the pressures in the cardiac cavities by increasing the filtration rate of renal glomeruli. Levels increase with increasing age. In obese people, it is 30-50% lower than normal weight people. Its increase may promote heart failure and acute coronary syndromes. NT-pro BNP is an aminoterminal pro beta natriuretic peptide and is 5-10 times more abundant in the blood than BNP.
Interpretation:It is used in the diagnosis of left ventricular dysfunction in asymptomatic patients in the early stages of heart failure. Since it is excreted from the kidneys, elevated levels also indicate insufficient renal function.
