Neonatal 17-OH Progesterone

17-OH Progesterone is an intermediate metabolite in the process of cortisol hormone production. 17-OH Progesterone levels are used for diagnosis of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) as an indicator of adrenal cortisol production rate. Neonatal 17-OH measurement in the new-born may indicate a congenital adrenal hyperplasia problem.
Interpretation:Hypertension, decreased blood potassium levels, and thus, abnormal sexual development are characteristic findings in 17-OH progesterone deficiency.
Sample: Venous blood from the arm or heels of the newborn.
