Methemoglobin

Methemoglobin is a dysfunctional form of hemoglobin that is not capable of transporting oxygen because the iron it contains is oxidized from +2 to +3 state which can no longer bind oxygen.
Interpretation: The medical situation of increased methemoglobin is called methemoglobinemia which is the toxic overwhelming RBC ‘s reducing capacity. It is commonly caused by medications using nitrate, sulfate drugs and topical anesthetics. Severe methemoglobinemia is characterized by hypoxia and cyanosis. red blood cells will have a characteristic mud like appearance. Low levels are not of clinical significance.
