Macrophages are blood cells that provide activation of the immune system. There are three types of macrophages. Activated macrophages (M1), wound healing macrophages (M2) and regulatory macrophages (M reg). After injuries, they are responsible of tissue healing Macrophages are also named according to the tissue they are found in, alveolar macrophages (in the pulmonary system), Kupffer cells (in the liver), splenic macrophages (in the spleen) Kupfer macrophages are the most abundant types with %89-90 Macrophages are derivatives of other immune system cells called monocytes.
Interpretation:Macrophages are increased in sepsis, chronic inflammatory diseases (rheumatoid arthritis), neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. MAS (Macrophage Activation Syndrome) is a life-threatening disease. It presents with high fever, liver and spleen enlargement, lymphadenopathy, and a sepsis-like complications which are suppressed with high dose cortisone treatment.
