Lipase

Lipase is a digestive enzyme catalyzing the hydrolysis of fatty acids. It also takes part in the transport and processing of dietary lipids. The main lipase in human is Pancreatic Lipase. There are also some related lipase types like hepatic lipase, endothelial lipase, lysosomal lipase, hormone sensitive lipase, gastric lipase, pancreatic lipase related protein 2, lingual lipase and lipoprotein lipase functioning in different locations.
Interpretation:Lipase test is mostly used to diagnose acute pancreatitis and other disorders of pancreas(pancreatic duct obstruction or pancreas tumor). It is usually present in blood in small quantities. When pancreatic cells are damaged, lipase increases in blood. A low level may indicate permanent damage to lipase producing cells in the pancreas and cystic fibrosis which is a chronic disease that affect pancreas.
