Glucose 6 Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD)

G6PD is a metabolic enzyme which plays a role in supplying reducing energy to erythrocytes (oxygen carrier cells from the lungs to the tissues for energy), to prevent them from oxidative damage. The enzyme is also involved in biosynthesis of fatty acids in the liver, mammary glands, adipose tissue and adrenal glands. Its main role is to reduce NADP to NADPH to be used in energy (ATP) synthesisi for metabolic procedures.
Interpretation: G6PD deficiency is a genetic disorder and very common worldwide and causes acute hemolytic anemia (damage of erythrocytes) in the presence of a simple infection. Because it is an energy supporting metabolite, it is used in cancer treatments by inhibiting its functions in order to prevent cancer progress.
