The culture is done to detect if fungi are present in a certain area of the body. It may also be performed as a fungal smear. Fungi are microorganisms that thrive in moist, dark places like feet, folds of the skin, vagina etc. The culture or smear is tested, when there is a doubt whether the infection is caused by bacteria, virus or fungi, because the treatment procedures are different.
