Fructose in Semen

Fructose is secreted by seminal vesicles to form a fructose-protein complex, in order to neutralise the acidic situation which inhibits coagulation. Under normal condutions, almost all this fructose is removed but if the fructose is high, the free fructose will increase the osmotic pressure of the semen, resulting in cell death(smermatozoa).
Interpretation: Seminal fructose levels are elevated in men with obstructive azoospermia and oligospermia. If a man has been diagnosed to have epididymal blocage, vasoepididiymostomy may be done to correct epididymal blocage. If he still has an elevated fructose, this may explain the infertiliy that is not caused bu the blocage.
