DHEA also known as Androstenelone is a steroid hormone precursor synthesized in the body. It is synthesized in adrenal glands, the gonads and in the brain. It is the precursor of testosterone and estrogen. It peaks in the adulthood and then slowly falls with age. A prescriptive type of the treatment is to treat thinning of vaginal tissue. Hormone circulates mainly as the 3 beta sulphate esther in blood.
Interpretation: If DHEA –S is high in blood, this means that the body is making too much of sex hormones.This excess may be related to adrenal cancer tumors, excess growth of adrenal hormone producing tissue(hyperplasia). High DHEA-S are elevated in PCOS (Polycysic Ovarian Syndrome). Infertility is also a high DHEA-S cause. These patients are usually younger and more hirsute than patients with normal DHEA-S levels. If the levels are low, this might mean an infunctional or damaged adrenal gland (Addison’s disease). People with low values, will experience weak muscles,lack of energy,weight loss , low blood pressure,infertility and short height in children.
