CMV is a common virus and once infected it remains for life. It rarely causes problems in most healthy people because of their immune systems, so it is not known whether it does. The immune system weakens during pregnancy. CMV is a cause for concern as the virus can then pass to the fetus, causing hearing and vision loss and developmental delays. Premature birth, low birth weight, jaundice, liver enlargement and dysfunction, microencephaly, spleen enlargement and seizures are some of the complications seen in infants. CMV can be passed to others through body fluids such as blood, saliva, urine, semen, and breast milk. CMV can also cause problems in people with weakened immune systems. CMV PCR test is the amplification (duplication) of the CMV gene to detect the presence of the Virus.
Interpretation:If bacteria have been exposed, bacterial positive CMP PCR values will be indicative of the stage of infection. If not, no CMV infection has occurred.
