Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Torch

CMV(Cytomegalovirus) is a common virus and once infected the virus retains fort he rest of life. It rarely causes problems in most of the healthy people, because of their immune system, so they even dont know whether they have it or not. During pregnancy, the immune system gets weakened. Then CMV is a cause of concern, because the virus may pass to the fetus which can cause hearing and visual loss and developmental delay. Premature birth, low birth weight, jaundice, enlarged and poorly functioning liver, microencephaly, enlarged spleen and seizures are some other complications seen in babies. CMV may pass to ohers through body fluids such as blood, saliva, urine, semen and breast milk. CMV may cause problems for the people whose immune systems have weakened as well. If CMV Ig M is present, this means the infection is acute and the risk is more.
Interpretation:If there has been the exposure to the bacteria, Iga, IgM and IgG values will be the indicator of the stage of the infection. If there is none, the infection of CMV has not occured.
