Cancer Antigen 125 (CA-125)

CA 125 (Cancer Antigen 125) is a protein used as a marker of ovarian cancer. Tumor markers are substances produced by cancer cells or normal cells in response to cancer in the body. Ovarian cancer occurs when there is uncontrolled cell growth in a woman’s ovary. CA 125 can also occur in some normal and abnormal conditions such as menstruation, uterine fibroid, endometrial, peritoneal and fallopian tube cancers. Therefore, the test is not a definitive ovarian cancer diagnostic test. If the BRCA 1 and 2 tests are positive, CA125 can be used as another screening test for ovarian and breast cancer. However, some women with ovarian cancer may not have elevated CA125 levels. This test can also be used as a treatment follow-up test in women with ovarian cancer.
Interpretation:Lower values are not significant. Although high values can be an indicator of ovarian cancer, it cannot be said with certainty that a high result is a sign of ovarian cancer. Biopsy HE4 (Human Epididymis Protein4) test, pelvic or transvaginal ultrasound and tomography are among the tests the doctor may recommend for diagnosis.
