CA 72-4

CA 72-4, is a cancer antigen protein. It is a type of tumor marker. Tumor markers are substances made by cancer cells or by normal cells in response to cancer in the body. It increases in gastric cancer and adenocarcinomas. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and Ca 19-9 also support the gastric cancer findings. Combination of these three markers would be a useful screening for gastric cancer. Ca 72-4 may also be detected in patients with breast, colon, ovary and pancreatic cancers.
Interpretation: Low values are only important to follow up treatment of gastric cancer patients. High values and monitoring high levels for the progress of cancer may be of clinical impoortance
