ACA, aids in the diagnosis of Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS), which is an autoimmune disease producing antibodies against anticardiolipin antibodies. Anticardiolipin antibodies interfere with clotting process. It is also related with thrombocytopenia(decreased thrombocytes in blood).
Interpretation:The presence of Anticardiolipin antibodies does not always indicate APS. Test must be done in 8 weeks to see if the presence of antibodies still persists. A diagnosis of APS can only be made with repeated results. Low levels of these antibodies may be seen in HIV infections, some types of cancer, taking drugs like phenothiazines and procainamide.
