SS-A and SS-B antibodies are nuclear antibodies (anti-nuclear antibodies) in patients with rheumatic diseases. SS-B is an extractable nuclear antigen (ENA). It is the most common antibody observed in patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and is also seen in patients with Sjogren’s Syndrome. SLE is a systemic autoimmune disease in which antibodies cause tissue damage through multiple mechanisms.
Interpretation:Similar to SS-A antibodies, SS-B antibodies produce very high positive results for SLE and Sjorgen Syndrome patients. Symptoms are similar to all connective tissue diseases; the main targets are salivary and tear-producing glands. However, it can also attack the thyroid, joints, liver, nerves, kidneys, lungs, and skin. Dental cavities, lungs and kidneys, visual functions, lymph nodes and nerves may be affected due to complications.
