Gluten is a type of protein found in cereals. Endomysial Antibody(ENA) is the antibody that body produces against gluten. These antibodies cause swelling of the intestines as gluten is consumed. If these antibodies were not present, the intestinal linings would be damaged by gluten. It would also prevent absorbtion of essential nutrients through the intestines. The name of the disease is Celiac Disease and Dermatitis Herpetiformis. These patients have high gluten-sensitive entheropathy. The Antibody type is IgA which is spesific for secretory glands.
Interpretation:The presence of EMA IgA in blood is highly spesific for Celiac Disease and Dermatitis Herpetiformis. A negative result does not always exclude the diagnosis of Celiac Disease and Dermatitis Herpetiformis. Further testing for Tissue Transglutaminase IgA and serum Immunglobulin A levels would be supportive.
