AAT is produced in the liver and it is a protein protecting lungs from damage. AAT is a special designed gene structure and when there is a genetic disorder AAT levels are low showing that the is a problem arising from genetic sources. AAT gene shows mutation as well and becomes undetectable in normal ranges. If a person’s AAT is low, it shows that that person has a mutated gene to be seen in his children although he doesn’t give genetic disorder symptoms.
Interpretation: If the levels are low, it means that the patient has one or more mutated AAT genes. As AAT is synthesized in the liver, it may also show that there is a liver disease.
