Fasting blood glucose results could be impacted by various metabolic conditions, such as the previous day’s diet, stress, caffeine intake, and may be read as high as 140 mg/dl for 1-2 times on different testing days. Higher values than this indicate the need to consult an internal diseases specialist. If the results are close to 140 mg/dl, it postprandial blood sugar test could be considered 2 hours after a standard meal. If the result is around 140-160 mg/dl, it is recommended to perform an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. For this test, it is required to collect a fasting sample. Then, you would be asked to drink a solution that includes 75 gr or 100 gr glucose. Following the solution intake, you would provide 4 other blood samples at 30, 60, 90 and 120 minute marks (according to your doctor’s advice). Those blood samples are used to read your glucose levels. The results are interpreted against your insulin levels and examined in view of the period of clearance of glucose from your blood. If the laboratory specialist interprets your results as high, they might recommend you to consult an endocrinologist, who should always be the ultimate decision maker.

Food intolerance is a digestion deficiency either congenital or acquired later in life against some food proteins. The intolerance of your immune system is caused by your digestive system rejecting the so called food and causing disturbances in your metabolism, but symptoms would be noncharacteristic and usually would not be considered as an allergic reaction. The impact might appear as an undiagnosed headache, gaining weight, fatique, depression, insomnia, joint pain and many more. This test is performed from a blood sample, and shows us which foods we are intolerant to. This allows a dietician to give us personalized guidance on how to avoid these disturbances by limiting those particular food types, and how to treat those nonspesific symptoms.
