Intestinal VIP stimulates the secretion of water and electrolytes, inhibits gastric secretion, relaxation of the enteric smooth muscle, stimulating pepsinogen and pancreatic bicarbonate , acting as a neuropeptide in inflamatory Bowel’s disease.
Interpretation: High values may indicate the presence of an enteropancreatic tumor(rare pancreatic cancer,VIP oma), causing hypersecretion of VIP. The symptoms are ,secretory diarrhea and weight loss by preventing sodium,chlorine and water absorption in the intestines.
