VMA, is a metabolite of catecholamine breakdown such as epinephrine and norepinephrine synthesized in the liver. VMA is excreted in urine. Very little VMA is derived from Homovanilic acid(HVA) which is produced in the brain and intestines.
Interpretation: Interpretation VMA is increased in urine of patients with pheochromacytoma (a neuroendocrine tumor that grows from chromaffin cells, producing hormones in the adrenal glands). It also increases in neuroblastoma and other neuroendocrine tumors.
