Uric Acid

Uric acid is a waste product of purine molecules called purine nucleotides which are adenine and guanine. These molecules are the building stones of genetic material of the body(DNA,RNA)and the energy generating molecule called ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate). Most uric acid dissolves in blood and excreted in urine through the kidneys. Another condution with the same symptoms is called pseudogout but the underlying reason is the accumulation of calcium pyrophosphate crystals in the joints.
Interpretation: High uric acid accumulates in the body fluids, turns into crystals. Acidic crystals from uric acid accumulate in joints and cause pain, especially big toes , ankles feet, hands and wrists. This causes inflamation, swelling, redness and discomfort in the joints resulting with limited range of motion. The whole process is called the gout. Uric acid crystals also make kidney stones which are hard masses causing severe pain in the lower back. This also causes blood in the urine, upset stomach and urgent need to pee. Chemotherapy and radiation also increases uric acid because many cells are destroyed in this treatment leaving their purine metabolites in the blood. Another reason for high uric acid is the dietary consumption of high purine containing foods like red meat (especially the meat of young animals and liver and sweetbreads) , sea food, sweetened drinks and alcohol, especially beer. Gout may also be genetic and can be carried to the others in families. The incidence of genetic reason is %45-73.
