Total Protein

Albumin and globulin are two main types of proteins in our body. Total protein test measures both albumin and globulin. It is tested if there is unexpected weight loss, fatique or symptoms of kidney and liver disease where the synthesis decrease and loss increases. Proteins are the building blocks of the cells and tissues. They are necessary for growth development and health. The main function of albumin is to keep fluid inside the blood vessels and maintaining the osmotic pressure of the blood. Globulin is the main component of the immune system.
Interpretation: Total protein is a general check up parameter. It gives an idea about symtoms like fatique, kidney or liver disease, edema and unexplained weight loss symptoms, but the underlying defect should be investigated by other tests because proteins are the components of many enzymes, hormones, cell and tissue building elements, immunologic molecules, transport and storage proteins of various metabolic pathway members.
