Stool pH

pH is the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration. Below 7 means acidic, above 7 means alkaline. pH of the stool is alkaline However, any problems in the digestive system and malabsorption stool pH becomes acidic. This occurs mostly in children who suffer from carbohydrate malabsorption.
Interpretation:pH of normal stool is slightly alkaline. If the acidity is increased, carbohydrate malabsorption in the digestive tract is suspected leading to further testing.
