It is a small nuclear RNA, composed of several protein autoantigens. Sm antibodies are spesific for lupus erythromatosis (LE) and occur in 30% of all LE patients. Sm antibodies are also found in patients with Ribonucleoprotein antibodies (RNP). Sm is one of the commonly referred Extractable Antigens in this group (RNP,SS-A,SS-B). This antigen is common in connective tissues as (SLE, Mixed Connective tissue damage disease, Scloderma (Systemic Sclerosis) and polymyositis/dermatomyositis.
Interpretation: A positive result for Sm Antibodies leads to diagnosis of LE disease.
