Scl-70 Antibodies

Scl-70 is also called Topoisomerase 1. It is a nuclear enzyme which helps in winding and unwinding of DNA in the nucleus of all cells. Antibodies against this enzyme, lead to a systemic disease called Scleroderma (Systemic Sclerosis). Scleroderma is a connective tissue disease, characterized by microvascular damage and fibrosis of the skin and visceral organs.
Interpretation: Positive results indicate the presence of Scl-70 Antibodies. The disease is first characterized by Raynaud phenomenon (a cold or emotional stress induced vascular constriction ofarteriovenous shunts, arterioles and small arteries in the skin). These patients should also be checked for Anti Centromere Antibody (ACA).
