Streptococcus pneumoniae is a bacteria that may cause a variety of illnesses. These may be sinusitis, otitis media, pneumonia, bacteraemia, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis and meningitis. The antibodies against pneumococcus, help the body protect itself against these species. Pneumococcal pneumonia, can effect upper respiratory tract and can spread to lungs , middle ear or nervous system. The illness is diagnosed in children younger than 5 years and adults 65 years of age or older.
Interpretation: Pneumococcal antibodies are reported in titres. Antibody testing is typically ordered after the completion of pneumococcus vaccine to verify that they have sufficient antibody levels for protection.
