Oxalate

Oxalate, as a chemical structure, is a molecule that attracts positive charges. Oxalate, which is found in the blood and easily combines with ions such as iron and calcium. This property mal lead to accumulation of calcium oxalate stones in kidney, colon, kidney tubules and urinary tract. Oxalate may increase with high dietary intake (lettuce, spinach, soya products, almonds, potatoes, avocado, sweeteners, cola drinks, etc.) and dehydration.
Interpretation:High levels in blood may lead to Primary Hyperoxaluria (PH) which is the result of inability of liver to produce an enzyme which degrades oxalate to prevent the accumulation of oxalate in tissues. Moreover, high oxalate levels interfere with the absorption of beneficial nutrients, Antibiotics may also cause oxalate accumulation because they destroy the good bacteria (oxalabacter formigenes) degrading oxalate. Oxalate can therefore accumulate in the blood as a result of gastric bypass operations.
