Nasal Smear

Nasal smear is a test used for the diagnosis of allergic rhinitis which is the inflamation of the nose caused by an allergen, such as pollen, dust, mould or flakes from the skin of certain animals. With a sampling probe, a swab sample is taken from the nasal mucosa to see if there are eosinophills in the sample (immune system cells spesific for allergic reactions).
Interpretation:The test is used to discriminate the allergic rhinitis from the virutic rhinitis. If untreated, allegic rhinitis becomes chronic and cause nasal inflamation and obstruction which may lead to more serious complications in the airways. These may be acute or chronicic sinusitis, otitis media or ear infection.
