Myoglobin is a protein found in muscle cells and functions as the oxygen storage unit for exercising muscles. The structure is similar to that of hemoglobin in erythrocytes. They contain a heme molecule carrying iron for binding oxygen.
Interpretation: A high myoglobin indicates a recent muscle damage. High levels in the urine damages kidneys. Increased levels may lead to heart attack, malignant hypertermia (very rare), disorders causing muscle damage, breakdown of muscle tissue, skeletal muscle inflamation (myositis), skeletal muscle ischemia (oxygen deficiency), skeletal muscle trauma. Low levels are not ınterpretable.
