Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH)

Lactate dehydrogenase is an enzyme found in the blood or body fluids. It is found almost in all tissues because it is a very important component of the energy creating biochemical pathways. When the tissues are damaged, it is released in blood (it is most abundant in heart, kidneys, brain and lungs)
Interpretation: It is increased in blood if there is a tissue damage. These include anemia, muscle injury, pancreatitis, liver diseases, lung diseases, heart attack and some types of infections (meningitis, ensefalitisinfectios mononucleosis). It is also increased in certain types of cancer and used in monitoring the chemotherapy. Because it is not spesific to a particular tissue, its increase in blood should be supported with other diagnostic procedures to find out the source of pathology.
Sample: Arm vein blood. Body fluids, Nonfasting
Working day: Everyday
