Iodine

Iodine is an essential element in Thyroid function as a part of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4 (Triiodothyronine and Tetraiodothyronine respectively).Thyroid hormones are the main metabolism and synthesis regulating hormones of all the metabolic reactions. Thyroid hormones are also important during pregnancy as they regulate the skeletal and nervous system of the fetus. Since it is ingested orally, its deficiency and excess divert various metabolic functions.. Iodine is found in the soil. Since the amount of iodine in the soil is different according to geographic factors, the iodine composition in the foods may vary leading to the deficiency and excess iodine intake.Therefore, thyroid diseases may develop in iodine-poor or iodine-rich areas. Sea water is a source of iodine. It is also found in seaweed and salt, but rock salt is poor in iodine.
Interpretation:Deficiency symptoms may include swelling of the neck (goiter), chills, fatigue, constipation, depression, slow heartbeat, high cholesterol, muscle weakness, hair loss, forgetfulness and overweight.
