Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) is the earliest test which gives result one week after the infection and screens for Hepatitis B virus surface protein.
Interpretation: The result must be interpreted with other Hepatitis B profile tests (Anti Hbe, Anti Hb, Anti HBc, HBe antigen etc.). A positive HBsAg result indicates acute infection or a chronic infection if positive more than 6 months. The HBsAg test is the best for identifying chronic infections including healthy HBV carriers.
