HbeAg is the soluble part of the core antigen of the Hepatitis B virus. The presence of HBeAg indicates that the virus is actively replicating and highly contagious. HBe appears in the blood shortly after HBsAg and stays in the blood for about 3 to 6 weeks after the acute phase of the disease and may persist for a long time or reappear in the case of active chronic hepatitis.
Interpretation: HBeAg test is most often used to indicate the monitoring of the treatment. A positive result confirms a high contagiousness.
