It is a polypeptide hormone that stimulates secretion of gastric acid by the parietal cells of the stomach and aids in gastric motility. It is released by the G cells in the pyloric antrum of the stomach, duaodenum and pancreas.
Interpretation: Although elevated gastrin may indicate tumors in the pancreas or duodenum (Zollinger –Ellison Syndrome), it may also rise if there is a problem in the production of gastric acid or if you are taking acid reducing medications such as proton pump inhibitors. If there is excess gastric acid with high gastrin levels, this leads to peptic ulcers, diarrhea and other gastric sypmtoms.
