Testosterone is a male sex hormone produced in the testicles. It functions in the development of penis and testes, deepening of the voice in puberty, the growth of facial hair, muscle strength and growth, sex drive(libido) and sperm production. It is also produced in the ovaries (the balance between testosterone and estrogens in the ovary plays an important role in ovarian function) and adrenal gland. It plays role in ovarian function, bone strength and sexual behaviour. The level of testosterone is controlled by FSH and LH hormones in the pituitary. Total testosterone is the measure of total testosterone concentration of the body, which is bounded to albumin and sex hormone binding globulin in the body. Free testosterone is the testosterone which is not bound to the proteins. This means that the active form is Free testosterone (Bioavailable testosterone). This is measured to see if there is a testosterone production defect or a protein binding defect in the inspection of the hormone related problems of the patient.
Interpretation:Both men and women can have problems because of high levels of testosterone. In women, Polycystic Ovarian Symptom (PCOS) is the main condution. Others may be infertility, lack of mensturation, acne, obesity, blood sugar problems, extra hair growth. In men, the problems may be the loss of libido, energy shortage, bone loss and infertility, anemia, erectile dysfunction, inability to have an orgasm.
