Stercobilinogen is a chemical created by the bacteria in the gut. It is metabolised from degraded hemoglobin and gives the brown colour of the feces. It is also called the fecal urobilinogen. As the liver conjugates bilirubin to make it water soluble, it is excreted in the urine as urobilinogen and turns into sterkobilinogen in the feces by the intestinal bacteria.
Interpretation: It is high in early liver disease and impaired biliary excretion.
