Fecal Elastase

Elastase is an enzyme produced by a special exocrine (not related to hormone production) tissue in the pancreas and gives information about a patients pancreatic function. The test is performed on stool(feces). The function of elastase is to break down fats, proteins and carbohydrates after digestion. It has a key role in digestive process.
Interpretation: If the levels are low in feces, it indicates pancreatic insufficiency that can be the result of number of different diseases such as chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, cystic fibrosis, diabetes and Crohn’s disease.
