Delta Antibody test is used for the diagnosis of hepatitis-D. This virus is an RNA-type virus that differs from Hepatitis-B virus by an envelope surrounding it. A quarter of the patients with hepatitis-B are Hepatitis-D patients. Although it is normally tested for Delta Antibodies for diagnosis, it is accurately diagnosed by HDV RNA PCR testing to be sure that the period of antibody production has not started yet at the phase of acute infection.
Interpretation:The possibility of its presence in every HBsAg-positive patient the test should not be ruled out. For those who are antibody-positive, HDV RNA should be tested to determine whether the infection is acute or chronic. If positive, it means that besides positive HBsAg, Delta Hepatitis infection is also present. The disease can lead to lifelong liver damage. It is the most severe form of hepatitis. It can lead to liver cancer or liver failure.
