D-Dimer

D-Dimer is a fibrin degradation product. After a clot is degraded, by fibrinolysis, the degradation product is a small fibrin unit but two fibrin degradation units bind to each other by their D fragments by cross linked bonds. This molecule is called the D-Dimer. The test gives information about thrombosis. It is used as a biomarker for thrombolitic disorders.
Interpretation: If D-Dimer is high in blood, it may obstruct the capillary vessels and lead to pulmonary embolism. If the thrombus is big, it may effect free blood flow and may cause embolism resulting with extremity pain, edema, colour difference. In COVID-19, the Covid-19 Virus replicates in human cells and the body gives a severe response to the virus. This response, damages the intravascular epithelium and thrombus is the resultant complication. This high synthesis of fibrin, also increases its degradation products and this results in approximately 4 fold.. D-Dimer increases in blood of Covid patients. Therefore, it is used as an indication of the severity of the infection and the follow up of the therapy of Covid-19 patients.
