CA 125

CA 125 (Cancer Antigen 125), is a protein used as a marker of ovarian cancer. Tumor markers are substances made by cancer cells, or by normal cells, in response to a cancer in the body. Ovarian cancer happens when there is uncontrolled cell growth in a woman’s ovary. CA 125 may also rise in some other normal and abnormal condutions like mensturation, uterine fibroids, endometrial, peritoneal and fallopian tube cancers. Therefore, this test is not a definite ovarian cancer diagnostic test. If the woman has BRCA 1 and 2 positive tests, CA125 may also be used for another screening test for ovarian and breast cancers. However, some women with ovarian cancer may not have increased CA125 levels. In women with ovarian cancer, this test may be used as a treatment monitoring test as well.
Interpretation: Low values are noninterpretable. High values might be an indicator of ovarian cancer but one cannot say definitely that the high result is the sign of an ovarian cancer.A biopsy,vHE4(Human Epididymis Protein4)test, pelvic or transvaginal ultrasound and tomography are the tests the doctor might recommend for defini,te diagnosis.
