Transferrin is a protein which plays a central role in iron metabolism and is responsible for Fe+3 (oxidized iron) delivery which is the active form of iron. It transfers iron through the blood to various tissues, such as liver, spleen and bone marrow where iron is needed. Beta -2 transferrin is the carbohydrate free part isoform of transferrin, which is almost exclusively found in the cerebrospinal fluid. Because this isoform is only found in the cerebrospinal fluid it appears as the biomarker for the inspection of leakage from cerebrospinal fluid.
Interpretation: Low values are nonsignificant. The presence of Beta-2 Transferrin in body fluids indicates that the specimen is contaminated with cerebrospinal fluid .It is also found in the serum of patients with rare metabolic disorders or the presence of genetic vatiants of transferrin.
Sample: Arm vein plasma, body fluid. Nonfasting
